Vitamin C and Skin Care

Most of us are familiar with the many benefits that antioxidants lend to not only health but also aesthetics but it is important to note that not all antioxidants are created equally as some are more beneficial to repairing damaged skin or reversing the signs of aging more than others.  When considering the benefits of antioxidants vitamin C certainly must be considered as a major player in maintaining skin that is youthful in appearance.  Vitamin C is critical in the production of collagen.  Collagen is the fiber that holds skin together.  Lessening of collagen results in sagging skin.  This is a major benefit of Vitamin C in skin care.  Vitamin C is also helpful in treating inflamed skin.  Vitamin C has a definite proven beneficial effect on skin and maintaining its youthful appearance.  More importantly skin is likely to respond specifically to C Esther topical treatments far more than any other form of vitamin C.  While it has been known for many years that vitamin C held tremendous benefits for the body and beauty there were existing problems with its usage.  One being vitamin C disintegrates quite rapidly within 24 hours.  Not so with C Esther as it holds it’s properties for months even years without deterioration even when composed in creams and lotions.  Another complication was that vitamin C often caused redness or slight irritation with users due to its reaction with iron in the body’s makeup.  Not so with C Esther.  

This form of vitamin C also is easily and rapidly absorbed into the body or through the dermis because C Esther is fat soluble and penetrates rapidly the cell membrane and outer area of the cell where the greatest damage typically occurs and help is needed most.  This is important because whether an element is water or fat soluble determines where it is able to penetrate and be effective.  Fat soluble vitamin antioxidants are effective on the outer cell while a water soluble vitamin antioxidant has little effect on the outer damaged cell of the skin though effective on the inner part of the cell.  Vitamin C Esther is ascorbic acid joined with a fatty acid (palmitic acid) obtained from palm oil.  The term for a chemical bond between an acid and alcohol is Esther bond, hence C Esther.  In fact, this form of vitamin C is non acidic so it causes no irritation even on inflamed or wounded skin

THE MAKINGS OF A GREAT LIP BALM

Chapped Lips  Dry air, cold temperatures and wind all have a drying effect on skin by drawing moisture away from the body. Lips are particularly vulnerable because the skin is so thin, and thus they are often the first to present signs of dryness. The occlusives materials like waxes and oils prevent moisture loss and maintain lip comfort.  Other additions to lip balm such as flavors, sunscreens and essential oils provide additional benefits.

The primary purpose of lip balm is to provide an occlusive layer on surface of the lips to seal moisture in  and protect them from external exposure.

The first lip balm was actually made out of earwax.  Though functional, the taste was undesirable. However, its popularity has grown in recent years. A small but growing fan base, committed to the use of all-natural products, touts its use as a superior organic alternative to other varieties of lip balm.  Nasal sebum has also been used effectively as a lip balm
 Though both ear wax and nasal sebum are unappealing to the authors of this article, Earthen Glow Minerals, the worst ingredient possibly is petrolatum. Petrolatum is also a non-renewable hydrocarbon that comes from crude oil. There’s really no need to use a lip balm that contains petrolatum when there choices that include great natural ingredients. 

Waxes

We feel that the base of a great lip balm begins with vegan based waxes such as Candellia wax  a shrubby spurge native to southwest Texas and Mexico, Floral waxes such as rose and lavender.  All are known to keep lips moist and create a hydrating barrier that holds moisture on the lips.

Almond Oil
This is one of the most useful, practical, and comonly used oils. It is great for all skin types as an acting emollient and is best known for its ability to soften, soothe, and re-condition the skin.  Almond oil application is the best therapy for conditioning the skin and reviving its natural glow. It is also known to improve the complexion and give a younger look to the person to whom this oil is applied. It helps a great deal in nourishing the skin.  It has a high concentration of oleic and linoleic essential fatty acids.

Orange oil 
Oranges are a healthy source of vitamin C and other nutrients.  A small amount included with other oils encourages radiant, younger looking skin.

Grapes are a naturally powerful antioxidant in all their forms, whole grapes, grape seeds, and grape seed extracts.
  Avocado oil 
This ultra rich organic oil is a delightful treasure containing high amounts of Vitamin A, B1, B2, D, and E. Also contains amino acids, sterols, pantothenic acid, lecithin, and other essential fatty acids

• It is also high in sterolins, which reduce age spots, help heal sun damage and scars. It is the sterolins (also called plant steroids) in the oil that helps to soften the skin and imparts a superior moisturizing effect. 

• This makes Avocado oil an ideal ingredient for people with dehydrated, sun or climate damaged skin, as it is an extremely good moisturizing and nourishing compound, assisting in the regeneration and rejuvenation of the skin. 

• In a study done at the Department of Food Engineering and Biotechnology, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in 1991 avocado oil was found to significantly increase the amount of collagen in the skin - which normally is under attack as we grow older. 

• Avocado oil is easily absorbed into deep tissue, and with its wonderfully emollient properties, is ideal for mature skins. It also helps to relieve the dryness and itching of psoriasis and eczema. 

• It is often also used dry or mature skin, or people suffering from eczema or psoriasis, and is very useful when treating sun or climate damaged skin that is dehydrated and undernourished, as it is said to help with regenerating the skin and softening the tissue.

 

Rose oil 

Rose Bulgaria Pure Essential Oil is the queen of oils for women. It is sensual, balancing and uplifting, as well as calming, relaxing and comforting in matters of the heart.   Rose oil is reputed for it’s Antispasmodic, antiviral, aphrodisiac and antiseptic properties as well as it’s wonderful ability to assist skin with rejuventation.

Clary Sage
It has antiseptic properties and is beneficial for dry skin. Its powerful aroma can seem intoxicating and should be used in small amounts.

Jasmine Jasminum officinale
It is often used as an anti-depressant, stress-relief, a sedative and as an antiseptic. This oil is considered one of the most precious oils due to its many benefits


Jojoba Simmondsia chinensis
The structure of jojoba oil closely resembles that of your own skin sebum, your skin's own lubricating medium. This gives jojoba a natural affinity to the skin, and is readily absorbed without making the skin feel greasy or tacky nor does it clog the pores. It has exceptional skin-softening properties, as well as the ability to minimize fine lines and wrinkles, promoting skin suppleness while assisting with the rejuvenation of the skin.

Vitamin E
First of all, because of its antioxidant activity, vitamin e is vital in protecting skin cells from ultra violet light, pollution, drugs, and other elements that produce cell damaging free radicals. plays a role in the anti-aging of skin. It helps skin look younger by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Also, free radicals are believed to play an important role in skin aging and therefore the antioxidant activity is quite valuable for this skin problem.  Skin is able to absorb natural vitamin e effectively. Vitamin E has many soothing, regenerating properties. This plant is basically grown at Provence in France. The word "lavender" has been derived from the Latin word "lavare", which means washing. Since ages, lavender has served as one of the most wonderful remedies for treating skin disorders  

Out of all the species of lavender, the English lavender is the finest one. It was originally known as Lavandula Officinalis. An interesting fact about this species is that, it grows only at an altitude over 3000 ft.

Pomegranate oil 
Beneficial to nearly all skin types; research is showing it to be helpful in fighting skin and cancer in laboratory tests. Pomegranate Oil  has very high levels of anti-oxidants. It has also been shown to work as an anti-inflammatory agent.  Being rich in antioxidants (such as polyphenol) which fight free radicals and promote skin regeneration. 

Evidence suggests that its calming and healing properties may aid treatment of numerous skin problems, including dry, irritated sensitive skin.  It has been found to nourish and moisturize the skin, improving elasticity, reducing wrinkles and preventing aging.  It has also been shown to help sunburned and ultraviolet damaged skin. 

Honey 
Honey’s ability to absorb and retain moisture make it an ideal ingredient in a lot of cosmetics as it helps keep skin hydrated and fresh and prevents drying.  Honey's natural antioxidant and anti-microbial properties help to protect the skin from the damage of the sun's rays, supports the skin's ability to rejuvenate and refresh depleted skin, leaving it feeling silky soft and supple.
 

Olive oil

Menthol

Step One

Cleanse and Exfoliate your face
A foundation should always be applied to a cleansed and toned skin. Use a mild gentle cleanser that is appropriate for your skin type and cleanse your face thoroughly to remove all the impurities and oils that have accumulated during the night.  The exfoliation process is also important.  Why?  The exfoliation process removes dead old layers of skin.  As we age our skin diminishes in it’s ability to complete the process of exfoliating which causes our skin to become thickened, rough, leathery, blotchy, lined, and wrinkled.

Step Two Moisturize you face
A mineral foundation as well as traditional foundation should always be applied to a well moisturized skin. Apply a moisturizer appropriate for your skin type and let it soak in, otherwise the minerals may appear flakey. It will improveyour skin quality and act as a protective layer to help trap the moisture in the skin and stop it from evaporation. A good moisturizer will plump and comfort your skin and make the foundation easier to blend smoothly.  Moisturizer also creates an even smooth canvass upon which foundation will more evenly apply.

Step Three Apply mineral powder  foundation
Application of Loose Mineral Foundation
With the lid secured on the jar of your mineral foundation, repeatedly tap product into the lid while holding the container upside down.  Once a mildly generous amount is released into the lid, swirl your brush evenly onto the lid picking up foundation on the bristles of the brush.  When even covered, gently tap excess mineral foundation back onto the lid.  Now with a gentle sweeping and circular motion, apply your foundation beginning at the outer edges of the face.  Begin toward the ear area and work inwards toward the nose.h head. With gentle, circular motions brush onto your face. Buffing with the brush will bring out the qualities of the minerals and will ensure an even application.  It will also blend the product onto your skin by warming the minerals with both the friction action of your blending and the heat of your skin.

Application of Liquid Mineral Foundation
You can apply liquid mineral foundation with a sponge, a taklon foundation brush,  or with your fingertips. A sponge will provide more control and a smoother application and blends very well but you will use more product.  A sponge is also likely to be more sanitary in use as it is easily disposable and likelier to be washed more frequently.  Put a little foundation on a makeup sponge and start applying on the outer edges  of the face. Use a small amount of the foundation and apply it in thin layers. Blend well and make sure the color matches your natural skin tone. Next begin blending at your forehead and slowly spread all over your face downward in the center section and nose area. Make sure everything blends together and looks uniform. Ensure that there are no uncovered areas or lines or patches. 

When using a brush it is best to wash following every use – this is especially true with eye shadow brushes.  If not, at least once per week.  Remember, the cleaner the tool the better the application of product.

 

Step Four Set the mineral foundation
Although when using mineral foundation it is not imperative to use a face powder to set and fix the foundation you will find that the results of using a setting or finishing powder are well worth the additional step. Apply loose mineral powder to hold the foundation in place for a longer period of time.

Step Five Applying mineral liquid foundation

When applying mineral liquid foundation with either a sponge or a brush it is best to begin by applying dots in the center of the face and blending with even circular motions outward from the center.  Always finish by blending downward – especially on the cheek and jawline area as this will ensure that any facial hairs lie flat against the face. Always set liquid mineral foundation with a dusting of facial setting powder or a light dusting of mineral foundation.  This will not only set your foundation for the whole day but will also provide additional natural looking  coverage if necessary.

Tips for applying mineral foundation:

• Never use harsh,  brush to apply mineral or traditional foundation.
• Allow your moisturizer to penetrate and dry thoroughly on your skin prior to applying your mineral foundation.
• To achieve a flawless finish it is best to apply the mineral foundation in several thin layers until you reach the desired coverage.
• Powdered Mineral foundations do not support bacteria like the traditional liquid foundations due to their non organic / inert composition.  Our liquid mineral foundations do contain non paraben preservatives which prevent bacterial and mold growth.

Luminous or a slightly glow finish foundation works wonderful on all skin types. It is flattering on mature skin types in most situations due to it’s ability to camouflage and conceal find lines and wrinkles,  with the exception of those with very oily skin.  This is because it can increase an oily look and the visibility of enlarged pores.  This foundation may not be the best selection for areas with high humidity or during summer because it can cause skin to appear too oily or shiny.

Primers though considered optional can do wonderful things to your appearance. Skin type should be a major factor when selecting the  best foundation formula that will best serve you.  Foundations are often formulated with particular skin requirements in mind such as dry, mature, or oily acne prone skin.  Once you’ve determined what your skin type is then you are better prepared to make the foundation selection that is designed to accommodate your needs.

Dry skin is often mature skin.  This type lacks elasticity, rarely breaks out, feels tight after cleansing, has small pores and lacks emollients.  This skin fairs better with foundation formulas that is non drying, moisturizing and ideally contains ingredients that blur fine lines and wrinkles.  Our liquid foundation which contains Primrose oil and vitamin E is both moisturizing to dry skin but also provides protective anti oxidants and emollients to nourish and moisturize skin.  Both our Cover Me and Youthful Glow foundations have line minimizing mineral ingredients that will blur any fine lines and wrinkles when applied and blended into the skin as opposed to many other powder foundations that simply crevice their way into fine lines and actually emphasize their existence.

Normal Skin is balanced being neither too dry or oily, has smooth even texture and color with medium pores.  It also exhibits few breakouts.  All of our foundation formulas are suitable for normal skin types.

2.For a more natural look you can try a technique called “popping your apples.” To do this you apply bronzer to your cheekbones. Then apply a lighter sheer blush color to the apples of your cheeks and lightly blend it back towards your bronzed area. This will give the apples of your cheeks a beautiful glow. Remember that a lighter shade of blush is key to achieving this look as a deeper color will give too much color intensity and the look will be harsh and unnatural.
